Buteyko
For Asthma
Although
you’re
probably
saying what
or more
to the point
who? And
why haven’t
I have heard
of this
if it’s
so good.
Professor
Konstantin
Buteyko
is as well
known in
his country
as the Queen
Mum in this.
Buteyko
Asthma Education
Programme
is currently
used for
the treatment
of Asthma,
Emphysema,
Allergies,
Hyperventilation,
Panic Attacks,
and Bronchitis
and for
the relief
of Sinusitis
and Hay
Fever.
Although
relatively
new in this
country
it is already
practised
in NHS Group
Practises
(e.g. Dr
James Oliver
MA (Cantab.),
Health Clinics
and Adult
Education
Colleges,
it is more
widely recognised
and established
throughout
many countries
in the rest
of the world.
Confirmed
by clinical
trials in
Mater Hospital
Brisbane
1994 (Australian
Ass. Of
Asthma Foundation)
Professor
Charles
Mitchell
and Dr Simon
Bowler in
a six week
trial reduced
asthma sufferers
Bronchodilator
by 96% and
Steroids
by 49%.
While a
physiotherapy
control
group only
reduced
bronchodilators
by less
than 6%
at the three-month
stage. Afterward
the physiotherapy
group were
put on Buteyko
they then
achieved
the same
outstanding
results
as the first
group. Also
backed by
the Russians
in trials
by the Moscow
medical
board where
studies
were carried
out in 1968
and 81.
Buteyko
also benefits
other health
problems
like Emphysema,
Sinusitis,
Hay fever,
Allergies
Sleep, Anxiety,
Digestive
problems,
Fatigue,
Rheumatoid
Arthritis
and other
breathing
problems.
How
does Buteyko
Work?
Asthmatics
over-breathe.
This means
breathing
heavily,
rapidly
or through
the mouth
when there
is no need
for it.
Often hyperventilation
occurs unconsciously,
resulting
in irritation,
inflammation
and constriction
of the airways.
The Buteyko
method consists
of specially
devised
breathing
techniques
to control
this over
breathing.
The exercise
restores
normal breathing
patterns
and greatly
reduces
asthma symptoms
and the
need for
medication.
A programme
(normally
5 sessions)
is individual
devised
for the
client and
supported
by the instructor.
